We were delighted to welcome Max Thorpe (OS 2011) back to Sevenoaks this week.

Max set a world record with his award-winning row across the Atlantic, is co-founder of Rogue Wave Scenarios and works as Head of Development at Shackleton.

He delivered three excellent talks and workshops, each crafted to motivate listeners to embrace ambitious goals and to equip them with the resilience to tackle life’s challenges.

The first talk for Lower Sixth students, ‘Through Fire and Water: An Introduction to Resilience’, focused on the theme of resilience – what it is, what is means and why it is important.

Max also hosted an after-school goal-setting workshop for athletes on our Sports Performance Programme, emphasising the positive impact big goals can have throughout life.

In the evening, Max gave an open lecture in the Pamoja Hall, describing his incredible journey to the very edge, from the moment he was hit by a devastating rogue wave during a race to row 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean.

After a capsize, fire and near-fatal rescue attempt in an Atlantic storm, the difference between life and death was ultimately determined by a few inches and a series of extraordinary decisions. Max talked about how he bounced back to write his own amazing comeback story.
