Archery is enjoyed as a Sixth Form sports option due to its highly inclusive nature. It provides the opportunity for students to learn and hone excellent shooting technique with the help of Archery GB-qualified instructors.

Since its introduction in March 2021, archery at Sevenoaks has been enjoyed as a highly inclusive Sixth Form sport option, by both boarding and day students. During the Summer term, archery is also available to groups of Lower and Middle School students after-school.

The archery range moves between Solefields for the winter, then to Duke’s Meadow for the Summer term, allowing archers to experience shooting in a range of different conditions and settings.

Archers develop their shooting at different distances by working through the 252-award scheme. Here students shoot at progressively greater distances up to 100 yards, aiming to achieve a score of or above 252 over 36 arrows. From here, students go on to shoot Archery GB classification rounds.

In 2022, the archery team won their inaugural postal fixture despite the opposition fielding a far more experienced team. Every term, we look forward to welcoming new archers and continuing to develop outstanding bowmanship.

The Athletic Development programme provides opportunity for any student at school to explore principles of athletic development, to either underpin physical preparation to support endeavours in sport performance or exploring health and fitness for its own sake.

Delivery of the programme is anchored by research and evidence, identifying best practice in long term athlete development. An article in Sevenoaks School Innovate Journal summarises this approach when considering training load and the holistic support of students across the academic year. Physical maturation and peak height velocity, a measure of growth spurt status, are considered when planning and leading the athletic development programme across the PE curriculum.

The PE curriculum includes a module at the start of Michaelmas term, which focuses on movement screening, acceleration and top speed running mechanics, plyometrics and change of direction ability. Each element underpins successful performance across multiple different sports. There is a further module in Lent term, allowing students to explore strength training and learning the technical checkpoints for a variety of exercises. Students improve their knowledge and confidence, allowing them to take advantage of access to the gym, which is supervised and available at certain times throughout the school day.

Top-performing students can attend strength and conditioning training during PE lessons. Individual and small group support is delivered, with targeted development that directly engages with endeavours across regional and national level competition. A priority here is completing performance objectives, which aren’t limited to physical requirements in isolation but inclusive of technical, tactical and psychological elements, that contribute to sport performance. Liaising with external coaches involved in student development means support can be provided with clarity and consistency, whilst managing commitments and training load.

Head of Sport Geoff Marshall has completed an BSc in Sport and Exercise Science and an MSc in Strength and Conditioning. He has worked in professional Football and Rugby League and within Team GB. Geoff is currently undertaking a Professional Doctorate in Elite Performance.

Athletics at Sevenoaks is open to all students regardless of age, ability or previous experience, and athletes are encouraged to participate across a range of disciplines.

Athletics has a strong tradition at Sevenoaks, and with the excellent six-lane tartan track opened by Dame Kelly Holmes in 2003, athletes are provided with an excellent training and performance facility. Specialist coaching is offered in all the traditional track and field disciplines and all students are given the opportunity to compete.

Boys and girls both also compete annually at the Kent Independent Prep Schools competition, the Kent Schools Track and Field Championships, and the Trinity Schools Competition. From these competitions numerous athletes proudly secure their Kent vest and progress to regional and national levels.

In order to secure more competitive fixtures against local Kent schools, the girls enjoy midweek meets, with the boys competing on Saturdays with a traditional fixture list against schools like Eton, Harrow and Tonbridge.

The school has strong links with Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Athletics Clubs and encourages athletes to join a club in order to widen their experiences with further coaching and competitions.

For each age group, the Summer term concludes with annual sports days where the focus becomes inclusive for athletes to continue to beat school records, as well as contributing points for their tutor group.

Coach Lewis Church is an International Decathlete, competing for Great Britain and England. He has captained the England Team at Indoor Internationals and is four time National Indoor and Outdoor Champion. Lewis is a passionate coach and has set up his own Athletics Club.

Badminton is a popular sport for Sennockians and there are several opportunities to play both recreationally and more competitively with regular matches against other schools.

Badminton is available as sports option to students in the Sixth Form and Year 11 squad players. Students get the opportunity to play twice weekly in the modern sports hall. The emphasis is always on students playing as much as possible and enjoying the sessions with competitive but friendly matches. Over the years we have enjoyed considerable success in matches against other schools and typically play around eight fixtures in the Michaelmas term and three matches in the Lent term.

There are also opportunities for younger students to get involved in badminton. There is a lunchtime club which is open to younger students, and we play matches against other schools, entering a mix of teams in the London and South East Badminton Cup run by Badminton England.

The newer, purpose-built facility now hosts climbing as a sport option as well as after-school clubs. For the keen rock athlete, the school also enters teams in local and national competitions.

Our climbing wall in the Sennocke Centre features an Entre-Prises imprint panel eight metre wall with in-situ ropes, an auto belay, and eyelets for lead climbing. There are three other walls up to ten metres, variously vertical, overhanging and a slab. There are also two towers and three high platforms which can also be used for abseiling. There are crack, tufa, arete and macro features, with holds ranging from big jugs to gnarly small crimps. We also have the unusual addition of a high wires course linking the platforms and viewing windows with holds bolted on for an up-close spectating experience!

We run climbing as a Sixth Form sport during senior games afternoons, and various clubs cater separately for the Lower School and Middle School. More recently we have begun to build a squad for competitions and have had notable successes in competitions such as the Southern Schools’ Bouldering and Climbing Competitions. We also enter the Independent Schools’ Climbing Competition in which we won seven of the ten intermediate categories in 2022.

Boys and girls of all abilities enjoy a professional and varied coaching programme throughout the year run.  Consistently voted one of the Top 100 cricket schools in the UK by The Cricketer magazine, Sevenoaks cricket encourages players of all abilities and provides top-class coaching.

Sevenoaks offers high quality cricket coaching for boys and girls whether they are experienced player or newcomers to the sport. Eleven Sixth Form and Middle School teams and six Lower School teams play each week. We also provide an extensive winter coaching programme including one-to-one and group sessions before school throughout the year, and squad training in the Lent term.

We have an extensive fixture card for all age groups with a mixture of T20, 35 over and all-day matches. A highlight for the season is finishing the fixtures with an all-day game against the prestigious MCC. In recent years we have performed well in the Kent Schools Cricket Association competitions, with the U15s winning the Miskin Cup and the 1st XI coming runners up in the Lemon Cup in 2022. The U15s got all the way to the regional semi-finals eventually losing to the winners of the national title.

Our 1st XI has had some wonderful cricketing experiences on tour to Sri Lanka, Grenada and Barbados. The U15 girls are playing in a Root Academy Tournament in Dubai in 2024 which will be our first ever girls cricket tour.

The school has a proud and very long history of playing cricket. Old Sennockians in the cricketing world include England players Chris Tavaré (OS 1973) and Paul Downton (OS 1975), who was appointed Director of Cricket at Kent in January 2018. Natasha Farrant (OS 2014) was picked for the full England Women’s team in 2013 while still at school, taking 2 for 15 in her first T20 match. She was a member of the first group of England Women players to be given full-time contracts.

Cross country has been part of our co-curriculum for over 150 years and the school has an excellent track record in national competitions with recorded wins at the prestigious King Henry VIII competition and the Knole Run. We have teams regularly qualifying for the ESAA Cross Country Cup National Finals and finish in the top 10 of approximately 400 schools nationally. We appreciate that not everyone enjoys the competitive side of cross country so also provide enjoyable sessions for those who participate more recreationally.

Cross country is a sports option for Year 11 pupils upwards, with regular training sessions on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons. These runs are supplemented by three after-school training sessions which are well attended by all year groups.

Students regularly get the opportunity to show their hard work and dedication in competition. A wide variety of team and relay fixtures are held against other schools between September and March, including participation in the ESAA Cross Country Cup, Kent Schools Championships, Henry VIII Relays and South East Schools Championships. However, a highlight is always Sevenoaks School’s own Knole Run which is widely regarded as one of the premier national fixtures for school-age boys and girls.

The school organises an annual training trip in October half term, which alternates between an overseas destination at Club La Santa, Lanzarote which is a fantastic training camp with brilliant facilities and a domestic trip to the stunning South Downs.

Coach Darrell Smith is an ex international cross-country and track runner, having won the English Schools and then placing 64th in the World Junior Cross Country Championships. He won a running athletic scholarship to Iowa State Univerisity, before returning to England in 1992 where he placed 8th in the AAA 3000m/Barcelona Olympic Trials. He has now Head Coach at Sevenoaks AC and Kent’s team manager.

Football is played by boys and girls across both the Michaelmas and Lent terms. We compete in numerous friendly fixtures as well as county, regional and national tournaments.

We offer a robust, inclusive programme where each individual student is catered for, regardless of age, gender, or ability. Every student is given the opportunity to experience the benefits that being part of a football team can offer. Elite level footballers are provided with the support and guidance to make the most of their talent and potential.

The boys’ football programme has seen record numbers of participants in recent years, and it has been a great achievement for every boy in the Lower School to have represented the school in a football fixture at least once. In addition, every boy who chose football in the Sixth Form has also played in a competitive fixture which has resulted in us fielding a 6th XI for the first time in several years.

Boys in Year 7 and 8 play football in the Michaelmas term and those in Years 9 to Upper Sixth play predominantly in the Lent term, however two terms of football are offered to those in Year 11 to 13 after trials in the first two weeks of the Michaelmas term.

The girls’ football programme is growing in popularity and strength year on year, and we now offer football to all year groups. We have had some huge success in recent years, most notably when our 1st team made the final of the inaugural Bradfield 7s without conceding a goal.

Those who are performing at a high level get nominated for county and national trials and our boys’ 1st XI captain is currently in his second year representing the ISFA U18 National Squad.

Futsal is a sport that is gaining momentum at Sevenoaks, it involves using a slightly heavier ball (which bounces less) and is played indoors. We host several inter-school futsal tournaments throughout the year and offer lunchtime sessions of Futsal to our students across the Michaelmas and Lent terms. Futsal is also part of the PE Curriculum. It has been great to see the futsal programme is gaining recognition with more and more students showing an interest.

Over the past 16 years Sevenoaks has built a strong hockey culture based around the enjoyment of experiencing both opportunity and excellence; two things that are at the heart of our department ethos. With 28 teams across indoor and outdoor we place huge importance on giving every student the opportunity to enjoy developing their individual skills, tactical understanding as well as building team camaraderie and resilience during training, matches and tournament experiences.

Typically, girls will play hockey in the Michaelmas term, and boys in the Lent term although we have grown our mixed programme, and this is going from strength to strength with fixtures. We enter most England Hockey competitions which means A, B and C team players also get the opportunity to compete at county level, and we have a strong record of our teams progressing to regional and national competitions.

Those with a deep passion for the sport are encouraged to access extra technical sessions, supported with their club and pathway journeys as they strive for excellence in their chosen sport. We are proud to have OS students Captain the Oxford Varsity side, as well as students heading off to Cornell and other US universities on hockey scholarships.

Sports tours are a huge opportunity in a young person’s personal development, and we have also enjoyed five superb tours to South Africa since 2008, as well as previously touring to Australia. Mini tours to Holland and Belgium also take place as we place such value on the benefits to our students.

Netball is the fastest growing girls’ sport in the UK, and we support our programme with regular trips to see professional matches at the Copperbox Arena in London whether that be in the NSL Superleague or in supporting the England Roses. As students enter the Sixth Form, they can enjoy netball across two competitive terms as well as being invited on our senior netball tour to Barbados – a phenomenal trip that has created lifelong memories for all who have attended!

We also encourage excellence amongst those who are passionate for netball outside of school with over 15 pupils over the past three years successful trialling for places in the U13 and U15 county netball programme. To continue their development, we also encourage and support pupils in the London Pulse Performance Franchise which is the next step on the England Netball pathway. Over the years we have seen players within hubs, the academy and in representing U17 NPL squad. This is supported by our outstanding coaches who have also been involved in the London Pulse Coaching team for over 4 years; coaching the Hubs, the U15 NPL squad and most recently the Kent PDP Academy.

Annually we also win county competitions, ranking as one of the top schools in Kent at all age groups, and most recently have seen success with our U19s who reached the national finals.

Swimming at Sevenoaks has a great link with the local swimming club where our Head Coach Jon Yates is also fully involved. This provides the great opportunity for excellence for those who wish to pursue swimming even further alongside their school swimming whilst continuing to achieve in their academic studies.

Coach Jon Yates is an Advanced Level 2 Swimming Coach with 15 years of experience. He is an ex-national Kayak medallist and was part of the Team GB Olympic Development Squad. He is current age group performance lead coach at Sevenoaks Swimming Club

Sevenoaks has a fantastic reputation for tennis. Our superb facilities and dynamic coaching team ensures tennis can be played all year round.

In recent years Sevenoaks has had many successes in senior and junior national tennis leagues, county leagues and school competitions. In the Summer term, girls, boys, and mixed teams play regular Saturday fixtures against schools across Kent and the southeast. In addition to this, each year we enter the Harpenden LTC National School Girls’ Doubles Tournament, the Independent Schools League, and the Independent Schools’ Tennis Association Championships where we meet some of the strongest teams on the school circuit.

Our facilities include three indoor courts (acrylic/Plexipave), and seven outdoor hard courts and two AstroTurf courts. Our three indoor courts allow over 180 pupils to benefit from group coaching and fitness sessions held during each lunch break, before and after school. Courts are also available at other times during the day for training and individual coaching sessions.

We are able to offer programmes tailored to individual needs but designed to maximise potential and deliver high performance training for our highly ranked players. Alongside our performance programme, we offer all students opting for tennis in the Summer term the opportunity to play in fixtures against other schools.

Volleyball is one of our most popular sports. The programme is designed to allow students of all abilities to develop their skills, and several alumni are now playing at university level, including Cambridge and Oxford. This is an inclusive and fun sport which students can play all year round.

Volleyball is a sports option for Year 9 and upward in the Michaelmas term, for Years 11-13 in the Summer term and for Years 7-8 as an after-school activity.

The school runs three competitive teams for each gender: Middle School (U15), Junior Varsity (U17) and Varsity (U18). As students progress through the programme, they will start to learn more complex skills as well as running system play as part of a team. Most of our indoor games are against the various international schools around London with the Middle School and Junior teams competing in the LSA end of season events. Sevenoaks teams are well known for trying to play attacking volleyball with the focus on building high level attacking skills, with the result being secondary to the performance and enjoyment on court.

We have links with local clubs, and we run sessions where less experienced players can take part in fixtures with them to build confidence on court and prepare them to move onto the next step of the programme. We encourage more talented athletes to get involved in club volleyball so they can test their skills in the adult leagues.

Our programme aims to prepare students to go on and play at university level, which offers huge social and physical wellbeing possibilities through sport. We also have a pathway to offer talented athletes the opportunity to pursue representative honours and also to consider volleyball scholarships at university in the US.

During the Summer term we try and play outside as much as possible to introduce students to a more relaxed style of volleyball as well as taking part in several beach volleyball tournaments.

Yoga at Sevenoaks is a regular sports option for Sixth Form students. We teach a mixture of Vinyasa and Hatha-style yoga, with the aim to build strength and flexibility. Yoga is open to all levels of experience, from complete beginners to experienced yogis.

Students of yoga will be working with new sequences every session, exploring an hour-long practice twice a week. Sequences are carefully designed to work with specific and varying body parts each time, from stretching out hamstrings to building shoulder strength to working on inversions and balance. Breathwork is an integral part of every class, and while many pupils look forward to the guided relaxation at the end, for others, yoga is a serious workout.

With an in-house yoga teacher on site, we also have the option to use yoga with our performance sports teams, building especially flexibility, core strength and balance, designed to aid proprioception and help injury prevention.
