Education boxes

Our Education Boxes contain a collection of subject-specific classroom resources available on loan to schools.

We are incredibly fortunate to work closely with many of our local primary schools. We are regularly asked if we can assist with specific resources for the classroom, which individual schools might not be able to justify for the limited use they need them for.

As a result, we have built up a resource library of educational equipment which we loan for free, like a library of useful classroom resources. We call these Education Boxes.

In order to share the resources fairly we normally loan boxes to schools for a two-week period (subject to availability). Longer requests will be considered but are not guaranteed.

Schools wishing to loan an Education Box will generally need to collect and deliver the box at the agreed time from Sevenoaks School.

Science

Celestron Computerised Telescope

This high-spec telescope provides outstanding views of the moon and planets, as well as bright deep space objects beyond our solar system.

The telescope can be controlled via integrated wifi using a free app, available for all mobile devices. Simply hold your mobile device up to the sky, select what you want to look at, and the telescope will move, focus and align its own view for you.

We will happily show you how to use it when we deliver the telescope to your school.

Digestion Model

This handpainted, lifesize anatomical model of the human digestive system shows the following:

An outstanding set of 18 real fossils. This special set comes in a well-labelled, tidy display box, which can be easily transported and neatly stored.

This classroom pack has been specially put together in accordance with the National Curriculum. It contains samples of soil and rock types in resealable pots, together with teachers’ notes and activity notes.

Giant Eyeball

This high-quality seven-piece, handpainted model shows fine details of the human eye.

The upper half of the sclera with cornea and eye muscle attachments, both halves of choroids with iris and retina, lens, and vitreous humour are all removable.

This giant eye is 3x lifesize: approximate size 120 x 120 x 170mm.

Human Bust

This model of the human torso is ideal for use by students of biology and anatomy as well as by medical professionals.

The model includes 13 dissectible replicas of the main organs which can be used to demonstrate how the body is constructed.

Human Heart

This handpainted model of the human heart is mounted on a supporting base and separates into seven parts.

The large heart model is sectioned such that both ventricles and atria open to expose the heart valves. Large blood vessels near the heart and musculature of the heart are also shown.

Major parts of the model are numbered and listed on the accompanying key card.

The outreach box also contains a class set of electronic pulse monitors and stethoscopes.

Kidney Model

Knee Joint

This lifesize model of the human knee can be used to explain the anatomy and physiology of the knee joint. It includes flexible artificial ligaments and can demonstrate flexion, extension and rotation of the joint.

The model is supplied on a stand.

Lifesize Skeleton

This lifesize model of a human skeleton provides an incredibly high amount of realism and detail for students examining the human skeleton.

Pinned joints allow for the demonstration of limb movements to showcase how the skeletal system interacts during motion.

The skeleton is made of a fibrous material, finished in natural colours, and mounted on a stable mobile stand.

Microscope Slides

Cells of your body and human blood system microscope slide pack

These Eisco microslides are strips of eight subject-related 35mm photo-micrograph images of real slides photographed through a microscope.

For each pack, the film is mounted in a clear plastic folder, providing excellent protection.

Supplied in packs of ten strips containing the same eight images.

Renewable Energy Kit

Allow students to generate their own power using this fantastic kit from BrightSparks 4kids. Ideal for Key Stage 2 and 3.

Transfer the free energy of the Sun to create solar powered circuits that produce light, sound and motion. Alternatively crank the handle of the electricity generator to create your own!

Each Kit contains all the components you need to effectively design and create renewable energy circuits including a robust digital multimeter to observe and measure your produced energy. USB Microscope

Small digital microscope with USB wire straight into PC or Mac. Software and instructions included. Great for field trips and front of class projection!

This Bresser Optik Biolux USB microscope with 4x digital zoom has been designed so that several people are able to view your findings simultaneously via the high quality 8.9cm (3.5″) LCD Monitor.

Manufactured with two LED lighting units, the lighting for this impressive microscope can take place in three ways as you are able to illuminate the object from underneath, above or both.

The transmitted light unit is used for transparent preparations (preparations on glass slides).

In order to see solid, non-transparent objects, the top illumination unit option is at hand.

(The top illumination unit is only useful when using the 4x objective, while the use of both lighting units at the same time is only effective with semi-transparent objects. This mode of operation is not recommended for transmitted light objects on slides, as it can lead to reflections on the slides.)

Another feature of the Optki Biolux is that you can take photos or record your observations as a movie sequence. The device has a memory card slot for SD cards and a USB port. Elsewhere, the magnification is 40-400-fold, while the digital zoom goes up to 1600 times (four times digital zoom).

Technology

Arduino Classroom Pack

Arduino is an open-source computer hardware and software company, project and user community that designs and manufactures microcontroller-based kits for building digital devices and interactive objects that can sense and control objects in the physical world. If you are happy with teaching Arduino then this pack contains everything you need other than the computer.

We have included basic electronic components such as lights, sensors, servos etc.

The software is open source and available here.

BBC Micro:Bit Classroom Pack

This outreach pack consists of a class pack of 20 devices. All you need to run these is a computer for each device and the internet.

The micro:bit is a tiny programmable computer, designed to make learning and teaching easy and fun!

The micro:bit was designed to be classroom-friendly from day one. More approachable than just coding, it’s a great way to achieve fun, practical results with motivated students.

Coding isn’t just for computing class! The micro:bit has projects that are great for Design Technology, Physics and even Art and Music classes.

GoPro Adventure Cameras

Action cameras are small, light and easy to use. They can be used underwater and are designed to be attached to people, helmets or moving objects such as skateboards, surfboards and vehicles.

Samsung 360 Camera

Imagine standing with a camera, clicking one simple button and the device taking a photograph of everything around you. You can then take that image and use it as a tour of your school, a photo on Facebook that others can see in VR or create an amazing 360° photo.

Samsung says: “The Gear 360 has evolved to let you record in 4K or broadcast live, and then make it your own with the Samsung Gear 360 app. And with the Gear 360’s smaller size and redesigned, easy-to-grip body, memories aren’t the only thing you’ll want to hold onto. Completely portable and handheld, or has a standard tripod mount underneath.”

You will need access to a Samsung mobile device to use this equipment as it requires you to download a free app, only available on Android.

Virtual Reality Headsets

With these Google Expeditions headsets, immersive learning can bring the whole world and even other worlds right into the classroom.

Great teaching has always been the secret to opening the eyes and minds of students, but with the introduction of Google Expeditions, we really are looking at a game-changer when it comes to learning.

Imagine being able to transport students to some of the most fascinating and awe-inspiring destinations without ever leaving the classroom!

Google Expeditions enable teachers to take students on virtual trips to places like museums, underwater and outer space. Expeditions are collections of linked virtual reality (VR) content and supporting materials that can be used alongside existing curricular material.

These trips are collections of virtual reality panoramas — 360° panoramas and 3D images — annotated with details, points of interest and questions that make them easy to integrate into curriculums already used in schools.

Boccia

Boccia is a soft indoor version of Boule with soft easy to grip throwing balls, suitable for children.

Players propel balls towards the target or jack ball. Each side has six balls (red or blue) per end to try and score points. The closest side to the target ball when all the balls have been played, scores. If the game is tied after all ends have been played, a tie-break end is played. Boccia can be played head to head, in teams of three, or in pairs.

Boccia is played indoors, on a court that is similar in size to a badminton court. Within the court are six throwing boxes, one for each athlete. Athletes must stay in their box during their turn.

Caribbean Steel Pans

This Caribbean Steel Pan box contains 11 desktop steel pans with stands and beaters as well as a copy of Andy Gleadhill’s Caribbean Steel Pan Book.

Using the same approach that has so successfully helped hundreds of generalist teachers to introduce African Drumming, Indonesian Gamelan, Brazilian Samba and other World Music styles in classrooms all over the UK, Andy’s book will show you basic techniques and warm-up exercises which cover all the elements of music.

The session guidance within will help you and your group progress rapidly through 10 weekly lessons, to the point that the class can perform a range of Steel Pan pieces confidently.

The steel pans have 8 notes, which are labelled and tuned to the scale of G.

The steel pan is very accessible and has both percussive and melodic musical capabilities, creating a well-rounded musical experience that children will love to take part in.

Composing box

This box doesn’t come with any instruments. You can use any classroom instruments that you already have or one of the other boxes such as the multicultural instruments. Read the accompanying Word document, with a worked example and please ask us if you would like some help supporting your school having a go at creating a class composition.

The Word document will be emailed out once the booking has been confirmed.

Djembe Box

This outreach box teaches students all about rhythm using traditional African djembes and group singing via learning traditional songs from around Africa. The scheme of work can easily last seven lessons with tweaking to the original scheme of work but could also be shorter if preferred.

Glockenspiels

Green screen and lighting set-up

The kit includes all the framework and tripods to hang a green screen (and two other colours).

The pack also includes all the lights you need to flood the scene with light; this is important as the computer software needs the green to be vibrant to isolate it.

Why not book the Digital SLR pack at the same time for high-quality footage?

When processing green screen footage, everything green is removed so students must not wear anything with this colour, as it will disappear.

Some skill with Adobe products will be necessary to process the recorded video.

pBuzz Kit

This pack is designed to give children as young as Reception the chance to learn to play a brass instrument, even though the pBuzz is plastic, the way you produce a sound is exactly the same as any brass instrument. Students will learn and perform the five notes on a pBuzz and play some simple tunes.

There are 6 steps, these may be achieved 1 per week or 1 over a number of weeks depending on the number of children, the time available and the level of the children.

Portable Gamelan

A Gamelan is a set of percussion instruments from Indonesia. This portable court Gamelan is called the Honorable Golden Dragon.

It comprises 3 Gongs, 9 Metallophones, 1 drum and some finger cymbals.

Each piece of music has a melody and repetitive rhythmic patterns that interlock. The melody uses 5 notes (a pentatonic scale) and numbers (so no prior understanding of reading music is necessary). The instruments build up layers of sound all in time with each other.

Learning opportunities = Listening, Coordination, Pulse, Pitch, Timbre, Vibration, Geography, Spirituality, Team work, Focus.

A Gamelan book and a folder of resources come with this box.

You can make the experience very simple for Year 3 or more advanced for Year 6.

Primitive Musical Instruments

This box contains:

A primitive brass instrument. To make this up, you need a hosepipe (two lengths provided), a mouthpiece and a funnel
A primitive flute. To make this up, you can add water to each of the three different sized bottles
A primitive violin. To make this up, you can stretch a rubber band over a tray, with piece of board to trap the sound inside
A primitive xylophone. This is a collection of wooden sticks of different lengths

Recorder Pack with beginner music books

Contains 30 recorders and recorder music books for beginners.

This box has a longer (four-week) loan time so that students can spend some time each week learning the instrument.
