On Wednesday 8 October, the Kent Academies Network (KAN) ran its annual Autumn meet-up day at Sevenoaks School, offering a dynamic programme of workshops designed to prepare young people for the next stage of their education and careers.

Students took part in a carousel of sessions led by Elevate Education, Pathway CTM, West Kent Mind, and the University of Kent, covering topics such as mock assessment centres, CV writing, university choices, and student finance. The day was praised for its interactive format, blending practical skills with opportunities for reflection and peer connection.

Year 12 mentees Avie and Harry, who have been part of KAN since the end of Year 9, shared their experiences.

Avie highlighted the value of the student finance session, which provided insight into the support available for higher education. She also praised workshops on interview strategies and teamwork, noting: ‘As new Sixth Form students, many of us have begun the process of looking for employment, something that can be initially intimidating however KAN has helped provide support in this area granting us the opportunity to attend a session discussing interview strategies and communication. This session was especially helpful for me as I have, like my peers, started my search for a job. It provided a fun and helpful opportunity to build up teamwork and leadership skills desired within interviews and prepare me for what to expect. Overall, I had an extremely fun time at KAN’s meet-up day, not only for the sessions that aim to aid my future, but also for the community KAN has provided.’

Harry described the event as ‘an amazing day with rich, fulfilling and intelligent opportunities.’ He particularly valued the mock assessment centre and the growth mindset workshop, which taught students how to set S.M.A.R.T goals and achieve them step by step.

‘KAN brings in multiple people to try to give its mentees the best possible opportunities in order to expand their horizons, as well as all the sessions it’s an opportunity to meet similar minded people your age and is just an amazing day in general to attend.’

KAN expressed gratitude to the mentors and teacher-leads from Knole Academy, The Skinners’ Kent Academy, Leigh Academy Minster, The Marsh Academy, The John Wallis Church of England Academy, and St George’s School, who volunteered their time to guide and support students throughout the day.
