The Sackville Theatre was transformed into an intimate, atmospheric venue for the annual Jazz Club concert, where our student singers and instrumentalists delighted the audience with a wide-ranging programme, supported by a professional band.
The evening opened with a relaxed rendition of ‘The Girl from Ipanema’, sung by Molly in Portuguese and English. She was followed by Esme with ‘Autumn Leaves’ on saxophone, then Zhamilya’s soulful performances of ‘At Last’ and ‘Fly Me to the Moon’.
Alex brought rhythmic sax energy with ‘Walkin’ Shoes’ and ‘My Funny Valentine’, before Seia’s performance of ‘New York State of Mind’ ended the first half on a reflective note.
Seth opened the second half with ‘Moon Love’ and the Duke Ellington classic ‘Don’t Get Around Much Anymore’. He was followed by Gabriel with a confident performance of ‘Night in Tunisia’, paired with ‘Bewitched’.
Sebi delivered a stylish take on ‘Cheek to Cheek’, before Noah offered contrasting moods on trombone through ‘Almost Blue’ and ‘Tangerine’. Simona’s vocal performances of ‘Turn Me On’ and ‘Precious’ created an emotive and memorable finale.
Our fabulous student singers were supported throughout by Jim Treweek (keyboards), Eric Guy (bass) and Buster Birch (drums). Special thanks also to Mr Beston (saxophone) for organising the concert and for his inspirational leadership.
