This year, more than a third of Sixth Form students have applied or intend to apply to a university outside of the UK and US.
This reflects a growing trend of students of all nationalities considering a range of top universities around the world. Offers have so far been received from universities in Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands, across a broad range of subject areas, covering many of the top 50 universities in the world. Outcomes are yet to be received from many universities with later timelines including those in Ireland, Germany and Australia.
Sevenoaks students have wholeheartedly embraced the growth of programmes taught in English around the world. The IB lends itself to this global outlook, with its mission to develop inter-cultural understanding and respect, alongside the versatility to contribute to a changing world. Cross-country or cross-continent degrees are very popular with Sevenoaks students; they allow them to experience a range of learning environments and to study in multiple countries. This year students have achieved offers from the Columbia (US) Sciences Po (France) dual degree, the Berkeley (US) Sciences Po (France) dual degree, the Trinity (Ireland) Columbia (US) dual degree, the McGill (Canada) CentraleSupélec (France) Global Bachelor of Engineering degree and the Bocconi (Italy) and HEC (France) dual degree.
Every year we see students applying to study in their first or second language. For example, our French-speaking students often apply not only to the UK or US but also to francophone programmes in France, Switzerland and Quebec in Canada.
Our Institute of Higher Education is well resourced to support student interest in programmes around the world, whether they are taught in English or in another language. Mrs Bloodworth is our expert in international university applications and is always happy to speak with students who are exploring their options beyond the UK.
