A big congratulations to everyone involved in the making and production of Hidden Depths! In an era dominated by sequels and reboots, it’s positively thrilling to witness entirely original work on a stage.
Written by our own Mr Fielding and brought to life by Mr Fielding and Mrs Cordón-Bates, Hidden Depths plunges the audience into the year 2132. Hidden Depths is fast paced and comical, depicting the oddly emotional tale of a mismatched submarine crew patrolling the depths of the Antarctic; this crew being the Sennockians themselves. The plot follows the chaotic journey of the HMS Black, where characters find themselves entangled in high-stakes scenarios involving unexpected friendships, betrayals and even a love triangle crossing enemy lines. Alongside this, the production also explored a unique and interesting perspective on the future unity of AI and humanity, highlighting how technology and humans may act collectively.
For three exhilarating nights, the Sackville Theatre was successfully transformed into a high-tech vessel, the HMS Black, captained by a tense Captain Bingo. The production was essentially a masterclass in witty banter and comedy, featuring an unusual yet thrilling lineup of characters including genetically modified pufferfish, a sentient coffee machine, and even a talking toothbrush, who proved to be a useful asset to the squad. The audience was thoroughly entertained by the sharp humour and clever comedic timing, especially with the cast’s portrayal and embodiment of these bizarre characters, constantly drawing continuous laughter, serving as a major highlight of the performance.
Adding another spectacular layer on top of the comedy was the wonderful singing and outstanding musical talent on display. The songs were packed with energy, perfectly showcasing the vocal capabilities of the cast and bringing an extra dimension of charm to the show.
Alongside the incredible dedication of the actors, the success of the show also relied on the outstanding work of the technical and creative teams. The brilliant set design and atmosphere blurred the lines between the audience and the stage, bringing the world within this futuristic submarine to life. Everyone involved worked diligently to create something truly extraordinary, showcasing the immense talent, ambition, and collaborative spirit that defines the Sevenoaks School Theatre Company.
Hidden Depths stood out as something truly special, a highly successful Sevenoaks original, and a one-of-a-kind production that will undoubtedly leave a mark on Sevenoaks for years to come.
