Oxford Schools’ debating competition

On Saturday 9 March, four Sevenoaks students headed off to the finals of the Oxford Schools’ debating competition.

Oxford Schools is one of the premier school debating competitions in the world, attracting not only the best debating schools in the UK but also some of the top teams from Ireland, Europe, Canada and Asia. Qualifying for finals day alone is difficult enough with only the best teams competing.

Our students were therefore presented with a daunting challenge. However, they acquitted themselves well. Christina Demidenko (Year 12) and Roman Pavlov (Year 12) nearly made the finals of the novice category, only losing out on speaker points. This is an impressive achievement given this is their first year of competitive debating.

Si Kai Feng (Year 13) and Camilla Savelieva (Year 11) did brilliantly coming sixth overall and qualifying for the semi-finals. Sadly they narrowly lost their round and missed out on the final. However, the result still puts them amongst the best debating teams in the country. We hope that their success can inspire future Sennockians to go on and win the competition!
