Sevenoaks School is delighted to have been commended in the Co-educational Independent School of the Year category at the Independent School of the Year Awards.
The commendation recognises our commitment to creating a truly inclusive and collaborative environment. As Sevenoaks celebrates 50 years of co-education in 2026, we continue to champion gender parity, with co-education shaping every aspect of school life.
Two new boarding houses, one for boys and one for girls, have developed our boarding provision in recent years, and our fully co-educational teaching and learning spaces encourage teamwork and participation throughout all academic disciplines. The IB, with its emphasis on critical thinking and teamwork, encourages collaborative learning, and aims to develop students who show empathy, compassion and respect toward the needs and feelings of others.
Beyond the classroom, more than 70 clubs and societies enable students to pursue interests free from traditional gender expectations. Student-led groups such as the STEMinist Society, Women in Economics Club and Girls’ Football Club ensure participation evolves into leadership. This culture is also reflected in sport, where mixed teams have achieved national success in sailing, shooting and tennis. We have equal numbers of boys and girls participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, while girls make up almost half of our CCF cadets.
Pastoral care forms the bedrock of our inclusive community. Sevenoaks has introduced mandatory online consent training for Year 12 students, promoting respect and responsibility. Student leadership reflects this culture, with 37 peer mentors and around 100 academic mentors offering peer support to fellow students.
The school’s commitment to equality is upheld by gender-balanced student and staff leadership and supported by initiatives such as an EDI Week on ‘Celebrating Genders’ to encourage thoughtful discussion of issues such as online sexism and AI bias.
