AAAS Annual Meeting

Over the February half term, 44 students and five teachers travelled to Denver, Colorado in the United States.

Visiting for the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) Annual Meeting, the largest science conference in the United States, we had the opportunity to listen to lectures and science breakthrough by experts in their field which ranged from dark matter to the psychology of crime. We also went to the exhibition where we met professionals from a variety of companies but also other high school students from America.

We also went to visit the University of Colorado Boulder, where we learnt more about American college life and were given a very interesting tour, whilst also eating in their amazing multi-cuisine dining hall! Then we went to the Museum of Nature & Science in Denver where we watched a 3D film about the Arctic and a short film in the planetarium.

Not only did we have some great educational experiences, but also some fun activities including an escape room, a quiz night with massive pizza, electric mini-golf, and an ice hockey game which made us all chant ‘Let’s go Avalanche’ and lose our voices! This was a new experience for me, and it was great to see ice hockey in the fantastic atmosphere with the American fans and their passion for this sport.

Seeing snow and venturing out in -10 degrees was another level of fun even with the jet lag meaning we all woke up at 3am! This was a fantastic trip with outstanding teachers and a trip that we will all remember.
