At the end of the Summer term, the department programmed six concerts devoted to the music of JS Bach, and particularly his instrumental concertos.
The idea grew from a performance given early in the term by outgoing Sixth Formers Lara, Claudia, Evan and Noah, who combined to perform the slightly less well-known concerto for oboe and violin. This sprouted the main series of concerts which took place at the end of June where the student soloists usually accompanied each other as part of the orchestra, each time with the soloists acting as Music Director.
Twice presenting the concerto for 2 violins in D minor, the Year 9s began and ended the series and congratulations to Rose, Jane, Elisse, Tina, Kian and Chloe for their crisp and eloquent interpretations. We also had performances of the A minor and E major concertos, with Piet, Chloe, Hugh, Mika, Luna and Soleil.
We also perhaps unusually found time for the staff to arrange their own performance of the 5th Brandenburg concerto, with each movement featuring different staff playing the solo flute, harpsichord and violin.
Whilst Bach may not have expected his concertos to be treated in this somewhat safari way, we all had terrific fun playing this music.
What better way to play us all off into the summer recess!
