HAPS 2025

I volunteered to teach science at HAPS (Holiday Activity Programme) during the summer, working alongside a teacher and other student volunteers to support and inspire younger pupils. HAPS is a programme designed to nurture students from local primary schools who show a strong interest and ability in Art, Drama, Maths, Music, Science, Sport or Technology. The aim is to help them develop their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm through engaging, hands-on experiences.

I helped to lead science activities and experiments, such as building parachutes to stop eggs from smashing, designing paper airplanes and carrying out an experiment to investigate the impact of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis. We encouraged pupils to ask questions, think critically, and explore scientific ideas in a fun and accessible way. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the children, watching their confidence grow as they got to know each other and worked their way through the activities. This experience taught me valuable communication and leadership skills, and deepened my appreciation for the importance of making science enjoyable and understandable for younger students. It also gave me an insight into teaching and the planning that goes into delivering lessons that are both educational and exciting. Overall, the experience was incredibly rewarding and has strengthened my interest in both science and education.
