Why is respecting others’ identities becoming increasingly important in the modern world? Are we are sowing a lack of empathy into our society? Is identity defined by birthplace or DNA, or by our experiences? How can women’s healthcare be improved?
These were just some of the questions explored in a fascinating evening of short talks given by six students last week. In our first set of Sevenoaks Talks, the theme was ‘Intersection’ exploring the overlap between political discourse, personal identity and lived experience.
In these engaging mini-lectures, the students focused on fostering learning and wonder and developing their public speaking skills. Their topics were:
- Thoughts on Fluidity and Letting Yourself Breathe – Nia
- The Intersection at the Heart of our Identities – Emeline
- DNA Between the Lines – Zoe
- Should progress be about power or purpose? – Marjolaine
- Changing the Future of Women’s Health – Ria
- Plato and Productive Political Discourse – Isla
Each presentation was thoughtful, well-researched and articulately delivered. Well done to all speakers and organisers. We look forward to next year’s Sevenoaks Talks!
