‘Imagination has the power to change everything.’ These words by the Kenyan-born American visual artist embody the spirit of the 2023 edition of Verve – the school’s creative writing magazine. The work of different artists has been the source of inspiration for much of the writing, as well as the design of the magazine. An excellent platform for students of all years, the magazine celebrates creativity through a diverse range of prose and poetry.
Back in October, a group of Lower Sixth students met to establish the 2023 Verve editing team. Their first job was to launch this year’s publicity campaign and provide a series of prompts linked to the theme of art and creativity. Throughout the year, the magazine has been a student led project – the team chose all the creative material and combined this with striking images and arresting layout. They also ran Verve creative writing competitions for students in Years 7 to 9 and the winners of these competitions have been recognised in the magazine.
Congratulations go to all involved – both writers and the editing team. It has been a great achievement and stands as a testament to the enduring power of language and the imagination to give voice to our shared experiences. As the foreword to the 2023 edit of the magazine reminds us: ‘Each Verve is unique: unique to its cohort and unique to its theme.’
