The Genius of Bach

Share article:

Johann Sebastian Bach’s oeuvre occupies a central place in Western music. For over 300 years his music has been studied by music theorists, performed by musicians, and enjoyed by audiences. They have marvelled at his ability to sublimate the most complex contrapuntal techniques into spiritually uplifting sounds.

Last Friday, students performed a number of works on our fine Malcolm Rose harpsichord, which is a replica of an instrument by 18th century French maker Donzelague. A wide range of Bach’s keyboard works were to be heard, ranging from the miniscule Musette played by Diwen Shi (Y7) to the most intricate of Prelude and Fugues, the G sharp minor from Book 1 of The Well-Tempered Clavier played by Arissa Vaziri (Y11).

The concert ended with a fine rendition of Bach’s Violin Concerto played by Marcus Hung (Y11), with Noah Davis (L6) and Lia Li (Y9) on basso continuo.
