KAN November 2022 Meet-Up Day

On 24 November, students from every cohort of the KAN programme converged on Sevenoaks School for the second of two annual meet-up days. The event provided an excellent chance for both Aspire and Core students from the KAN schools to see each other in person while also collaborating with peers on activities designed to be year-group specific, such as:

  • (Y10) Two creative sessions taken by Sevenoaks sixth-form students on the poetry of Taylor Swift and the psychology of horoscopes

  • (Y11) Revision skills session with Head of ITL, Mark Beverley

  • (Y12) Exploring the possibilities of Social Entrepreneurship with the Director of the Institute of Service and Partnerships, Cat Davison and KAN mentor Sophie Rayment

  • (Y13) Exploring higher education options with Jamie Russell and KAN mentor Tom Corner

We were delighted to welcome facilitators from Debate Mate, who ran an afternoon session with all the year groups that sought to challenge and extend students in the articulation of their ideas. The session was designed to build confidence in public speaking, to stimulate inquisitiveness and to encourage robust, respectful challenge of arguments. The students participated with critical and creative energy, becoming increasingly agile in their debating over the course of the session, and it’s been great to hear that some have subsequently joined their school debate teams.

The meet-up day also provided the perfect opportunity to recognise the achievements of students, with awards given for 100% attendance and for outstanding Summer Projects.

Many thanks are owed to the KAN Lead Teachers at Skinners Kent Academy, Marsh Academy, Knole Academy and John Wallis Academy for organising student participation and for their valuable insights on how the KAN Programme can operate even more transformative in 2023!
