Sixth Form Entry

For decades Sevenoaks has been taking a significant number of new students into the Sixth Form, with around 75-80 places available annually. These new students, most of them boarders, many living abroad, make up about a third of the year group and are a vital element in what makes the Sixth Form at Sevenoaks such a vibrant, stimulating community where lifelong friendships are forged. The newcomers are eagerly welcomed into our community by staff and students alike, who relish the fresh energy and perspectives they bring to the cohort. All our Sixth Formers take the IB Diploma – which Sevenoaks has taught since 1978 – giving them a real sense of shared endeavour as well as a rigorous and well-rounded education.

Entry is competitive, and we look for evidence of strong all-round potential. Successful applicants will usually be predicted to gain high grades in their GCSEs or equivalent examinations, but sporting, creative or other talents are also important, as is intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness and kindness.

The deadline for 2020 applications has now passed. We welcome applications for 2021 onwards.

If you are considering Sevenoaks for your son or daughter’s Sixth Form, we strongly recommend that you come and visit us. Details about our group visits, open mornings and how to arrange an individual visit can be found here.

All subjects are taught in English at Sevenoaks School. Students must therefore have a high level of fluency in English, both written and spoken: at least Upper Intermediate level, equivalent to B2 (CEFR); ALTE level 3; or IELTS levels 5-6. Formal language qualifications are welcomed but not required.

All candidates take entrance tests in English, Maths (with additional 30 minutes for HL candidates), Sciences and Thinking Skills (humanities/languages/creative subjects).  We strongly encourage applicants to take their tests at Sevenoaks or one of our international testing days, as this gives us the best chance to get to know them. However, it may be possible to make alternative arrangements if necessary, such as taking the exams at a local British Council office.

Sevenoaks is an academically fast-paced school and will not suit all students. Some of our candidates, particularly those not at UK school or for whom English is a second language, may wish to have an early indication of their likely suitability, so we provide an online test during the application process. This is optional and the results remain confidential to candidates and their families, but it can be used to help with planning. Some families may also find a diagnostic assessment through UKiset useful. We do not require applicants to take a UKiset test, but the scores from this test are automatically forwarded to Sevenoaks if the school is chosen as one of the three preferred choices of the candidate, and the admissions team at Sevenoaks will then be able to give you feedback on the likely suitability of the candidate.
