UK Space Design Competition

Share article:

On Saturday 17 November, Year 10 and Lower Sixth students took part in the South East Regional Heats of the UK Space Design Competition, winning their heat.

In this event, students join with other schools to form teams of around 20, in order to design methods to keep humans alive and happy in outer space or on the surface of other worlds, integrating solutions with the natural environment. The competition emulates, as closely as possible, the experience of working as a member of an aerospace industry proposal team.

Technical knowledge and teamwork was put to the test as our students, working with students from Trinity School, Croydon, found a solution to a simulated Request-for-Proposal to house 4000 people under the ice of Jupiter’s moon, Europa, in the year 2118.

Working in teams under their elected president, Barty Wardell (Lower Sixth), comprising of: Structural, Operations, Human Engineering and Automation, the group put together a presentation of no more than 25 slides and 15 minutes.

After hearing detailed presentations from all four super-teams, the panel of judges, comprising engineers from the Aerospace industry, announced that our team, Dougeldyne-Flechtel, had won the heat. We are delighted that the team will now take part in the two-day UK final at Imperial College in March, where schools work together to form teams of 50 people.
