Our students enjoyed a cross-curricular event between Spanish and ToK this week.
Jason Webster, distinguished author, spoke to the L6 about ‘duende’, the soul or spirit of flamenco, and its roots in gypsy, Indian and Arabic cultures as brought together in Andalucía.
He went on to teach the 12/8 clapping rhythm and the 3 pillars of flamenco: cante, baile y toque. His wife Salud, a celebrated Valencian dancer, danced different flamenco dances to music (tango, guajira, caña y poro).
ToK students were encouraged to contemplate this most Spanish of phenomena and ask whether they could experience duende in provincial Kent if moved in the presence of an authentic flamenco practitioner.
