Sevenoaks win the Hoad Shield at 2018 BSDRA South Eastern Area Championships
Sevenoaks hosted the 2018 BSDRA South Eastern Area Championships for the Hoad Shield on Saturday 28 April at Bough Beech sailing club. Nominally the South-East regional championships, the event saw 30 teams from 17 different schools from all over the country taking part in U18 and U16 competitions.
The forecast for the day did not look good, with light winds and rain expected, but fortunately we ended up with pretty good conditions throughout the day and were able to run through the full race programme.
Sevenoaks entered two teams into the U18 division and three in the U16. In the U16 division Sevenoaks A finished second in the league stage but were knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual winners Winchester. They did bounce back to beat Stamford in the third place play off. Sevenoaks B placed ninth and Sevenoaks C 12th.
In the U18s Sevenoaks B had a great day in their first event as a team, finishing sixth, narrowly missing out on a semi-final place. The A team ended the league stage with nine wins from their ten races and were ranked second behind Royal Grammar School (RGS). This meant they faced Royal Hospital School in their best of three semi-final. A poor start and penalty turns in race one saw RHS take the win but Sevenoaks regrouped well to cut out the mistakes and take the next two races to advance to the final where they would face RGS. Sevenoaks really stepped up for the final, taking it 2-0 to claim victory and the Hoad Shield!
The next event for the teams will be the Thames Valley Championships in June before the schools nationals at the end of term.
