Sevenoaks School took a squad of 31 runners to compete in the Kent Schools Cross Country Championships at Duke of York’s School, Dover on Saturday 21 January 2017.
With the top four in each race assured selection to compete for Kent in the English Schools Championships, and the top 20 runners earning Kent vests to compete in the South East Schools Championships, competition was tough.
The standout performances were by Phoebe Barker who won the Senior Girls’ race a week after winning the Knole Run and two weeks after representing GB. Her season continues to go from strength to strength and she looks set to challenge for a place of the GB Junior team for the World Cross Country Championships.
In the Junior Girls’ race, Maddie Wise ran a measured race to move through the field to place third and assured selection for the English Schools. She has another year in the same age group, making this performance even more impressive.
These performances were backed up by top ten places from Eleanor Allen, Telia Green, Ingmar Gunn, Clara Tyler and Carlotta Weitzel, putting them all in strong positions to make it through to the English Schools.
‘The team had a great day with 18 runners coming in the top 20 and so will represent Kent in the South East England Championships on 4 February. I am hopeful many will qualify for nationals,’ commented Darrell Smith, Cross Country Coach.
