Daniel Wu and Oliver Tushingham were runners-up at Bristol University’s Schools Debating competition last week. They went into the final as joint leaders, having gained three wins and one second place in the first four rounds, but were narrowly beaten by St Paul’s Girls to the championship title. Oliver was named third best speaker overall, while Dan came fifth.

With just 15 minutes to prepare for each debate and no access to the internet for research, they, and a novice Year 11 team of Ellen Steiner and Elise van den Hoek, argued the following motions:

  • This House Believes the Government Should Raise the Minimum Wage to £15
  • This House Would Screen Asylum Seekers for their Ability to Integrate Culturally
  • This House Believes that the Leaders of Local Police Forces should be Directly Elected by the Communities they Serve
  • This House Believes that the UK Should Leave the EU
  • This House Would Prohibit all Research Aiming to Create ‘Strong’ Artificial Intelligence
