Sevenoaks is undoubtedly the school to beat when it comes to sailing, winning the school national championships 16 times in the last 20 years. Sailing continues all year round from Year 9 through to the Upper Sixth and complete beginners are welcome to have a go.
Regarded as the top sailing school in the country.
Good Schools Guide
The school has excellent sailing facilities with its own fleet of 26 fireflies and 16 RS Fevas. Sailing takes place four days a week at Bough Beech Sailing Club and sessions are run by the school’s two full-time coaches and a number of excellent instructors.
As well as training at Bough Beech, sailors compete at a number of events around the country. In Years 9 and 10 sailors mainly compete in fleet racing on the RS Feva circuit; in recent years several Sevenoaks School boats qualified for the Feva worlds.
In Year 11 and the Sixth Form the focus switches to team racing where the school teams compete on both the school and university circuits. In recent years the school teams have beaten the 1st teams from Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and Southampton universities. In 2011 the school’s 1st team was selected to represent GBR at the Team Racing World Championships: the first school team ever to do this. They finished an impressive fourth overall and the school has since been selected again, also finishing fourth in 2015.
Recent achivements include Sevenoaks winning the British Schools Team Racing National Championships in 2019, 2018, 2016 and 2015, and finishing as the top U19 team in the RYA Ladies Team Racing nationals in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Sevenoaks has produced a number of very successful sailors including Olympic medallists, America’s Cup sailors and many top team racers. You can find some of them listed here.
Every team that has been selected to represent GBR at the Team Racing Worlds since it began in 1995 has included at least one Old Sennockian, with the winning GBR team in 2011 boasting two Old Sennockians and Head of Sailing Andy Cornah.
