Sevenoaks sailors finish fifth at senior national championships.
The weekend of 23 March saw Sevenoaks sailors join 17 other schools, university and senior teams at Spinnaker Sailing Club in the New Forest to compete in the 2019 Royal Yachting Association Women’s Team Racing Championships.
Saturday saw teams all race each other in a round-robin format. Sevenoaks had a great day, showing excellent speed and team work to finish the day in third position overall, just behind the Oxford and Cambridge university teams, thus qualifying for the top six gold league. It was truly a great achievement to place in the same league as teams with much more experience.
Sunday was an unsurprisingly challenging day. Sevenoaks raced against the top six teams and the girls managed two wins from their five races, which left them in a three way tie for third place. Unfortunately, they narrowly missed out on the semi-finals, instead placing fifth.
The girls were naturally a little disappointed to be so close to the knock-outs, but could reflect on an excellent achievement overall. For a school team to finish fifth at a senior national championships is a real achievement and the girls were the top U19 team for the third year running.
Congratulations to the teams: Cossie Lewis (Capt) & Annabel Richards Anne-Marie Ratnage & Alice Parker Ellie Wild & Issy Willis
