Refugee Week 2021

Refugee Week is a school-wide week that will take place from 15-21 March, led by the Refugee Action service group and Charity Committee, following the international week theme in June of ‘We Cannot Walk Alone’.

Throughout this week, we aim to develop our collective understanding of the diverse experiences relating to refugees today, as well as introducing students to ways to support through informed action, partly in support of Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees and UNHCR.

Events & Activities

Speaker Events

Alongside assemblies which feature the experiences of local Syrians, students can attend a range of workshops during the week and will be sent the links to sign up directly on Firefly.

We would like to offer parents and partner schools the opportunity to attend the following three Teams live events, which will be led by students:

Monday 15 March 5:00-5:45pm:

Humphrey Pring, former chair of Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees presents "The Refugee Experience and Myth Busting: Life for Refugees in the UK". Click here to attend.

Wednesday 17 March 5:00-5:45pm:

David Skinner OBE, former Head of Save the Children's Rohingya Response presents "The Refugee Experience and Myth Busting: Life in a Refugee Camp”. Click here to attend.

Friday 19 March 5.00-6.00pm:

Eric Le Guen, Senior Field Security Advisor and Global Analyst at UNHCR and Amjad Saleem (OS), Protection and Inclusion Manager, Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, offer a talk focused on the work of UNCHR. Click here to attend.

Tutor Group Activities

Tutor groups in years 7-10 will all choose a fundraising, advocacy, awareness through art or ethical consumerism project from our list of options, with optional engagement from other years.

We welcome all parents or families to join in with the fundraising challenge which is in partnership with the Masked Miler in its penultimate week, in support of Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees who help refugees to settle into the local area. Our students have been working with SWR for the last few years partly through conversation lessons and co-creating cookery books.

Together, we are aiming to run, walk, row or cycle 5486 miles (the distance to Syria and back) and possibly even raise £5486 in the process! You can join the team here by clicking ‘join team’ at the top right hand corner, or donate to one of the existing teams.

Non-Uniform Day

On Wednesday 17 March we will hold a non-uniform day with donations going to UNCHR. We would request all students to wear something blue as a symbol of their support of UNHCR.

Art Competition

As part of Refugee Week we are running an art competition open to Sevenoaks students and local schools. The theme of the competition is We Cannot Walk Alone. You can find further details about the competition in the video below. Please submit your final entries via this form.
