Six Characters in Search of an Author

A cast of 19 Lower Sixth students took on the challenge of staging in just eight weeks an adapted and updated version of Pirandello’s exploration of illusion, reality and identity: Six Characters in search of an Author. The talented mix of day and boarding students (8 of which were new to the school) collaborated brilliantly to convey the complex concepts the play examines. While some brought a passionate intensity to the ‘characters’ who are seeking an author, others offered humour and intense concentration to their roles as the theatre group whose rehearsal is interrupted by the wandering characters. A third group played ‘marionettes’: masked figments of the imagination who presented a different angle on the characters’ story before taking over the stage by the end of the piece. As with all Sevenoaks productions, a challenging script was brought to life not just by dynamic and committed acting but through wonderfully detailed work on sound, lighting and costume by the rest of the production team.
