Piano Showcase: Protest Pianist
Held on 21 January, Protest Pianist was designed to approach music from a different angle – as means of protest instead of entertainment or appreciation. The concert sought to uncover music as a beacon of cultural democracy and as an agent for change by presenting music which on the one hand protests about global issues, and on the other hand dissents against the conventions and institutions of music itself.
The Space Ensemble opened the concert with the riotous Workers Union by Dutch iconoclast Louis Andriessen. Our students then take turns to perform various iconoclastic piano works. The concert finishes with a socialistic performance of Volkslied involving all players.
