How to make an apple pie from scratch: Dr Harry Cliff

‘If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.’ Inspired by astrophysicist Carl Sagan’s quote, Dr Harry Cliff set out to answer the fundamental question, ‘What is the origin of our universe?’

Last Thursday, students from Sevenoaks School, as well as neighbouring schools, were treated to a talk by Cambridge particle physicist Dr Harry Cliff in the Pamoja Hall; the first live and in-person lecture in The Space for the first time in 18 months. He spoke about the matter that makes up the universe, questioned the existence of antimatter and explained the intricacies of b-mesons and quarks.

Afterwards, crowds of students chatted with him in the Space foyer and asked questions as he signed copies of his book, How to Make an Apple Pie from Scratch, sold by Sevenoaks Bookshop.
