Congratulations to Rhiannon Durant and Aidan McSharry on their performances in the HSBC/British Council Mandarin Chinese speaking competition 2018/19 yesterday.
Rhiannon won the first prize under the advanced learner category (and a trip to China), and Aidan won the third prize under intermediate plus category.
Hundreds of candidates took part at five regional heats in December, with only ten for each category going through to the final at the British Museum. They were required to give a prepared speech, answer judges’ questions on the theme, translate a few sentences, and give an improvised speech (with topics given on the spot).
Both Rhiannon and Aidan performed extremely well under the pressure.
