IB Spanish students took part in an exchange to Santiago de Compostela during the Easter holidays.
After a flight and a long coach journey we were greeted by our exchanges and went to their homes. We were all given a very warm, and very Spanish, welcome, and were made to feel very much at home. The following days and evenings were filled with a combination activities from cultural and educational museum visits, to seeing towns around Santiago and seeing the city itself, and of course visiting the stunning cathedral. All the while, we were improving the fluency of our spoken Spanish, and just as importantly solidifying real friendships with all our Spanish equivalents. After experiencing the culture, and integrating into the life of our exchanges it was time for a goodbye which, although happy for all of us who were so thankful for the friends we had made, was almost a bit tearful. This exchange was an experience beyond all expectations, which we were lucky enough to enjoy with kinder people than we could possibly have hoped for.

Once we arrived in Santiago de Compostela we were quickly reunited with our exchanges and managed to pick up right where we left off back in January. Over the course of the next week we were fully immersed in Spanish culture and have experienced unlike any we have had up till now. For me a highlight was our visit to the world-famous cathedral situated within the old town. As well as visiting various parts of Santiago we also had two day trips to Ferrol and A Coruna which again added to the wealth of activities on offer during the exchange. Overall the exchange was truly unforgettable and we all made friends I’m sure we will keep in contact with for a long time.
