On December 29, a group of 39 runners, swimmers and teachers landed in Lanzarote, excited for the coming week of sport.
We stayed at the incredible Club La Santa; a sports resort where top Olympic athletes come to train and which boasts facilities such as 3 Olympic-sized swimming pools, a newly refurbished track, a mini golf course and a private water sports lagoon to name a few. This, coupled with the constant sun and summer temperatures meant we certainly enjoyed our escape from the UK!
Throughout the trip not only did we partake in multiple running and swimming sessions per day, but we also tried other new activities to complement our training such as stretch and relax, pilates, absolute abs and yoga. No-one did this better than Vita De Munck, Clara Tyler, Lexi Marza and Isabella Bristow who managed to try out every single activity the resort had to offer, quite an amazing feat.
Of course, we did have time to enjoy the other, more relaxed activities Club La Santa had to offer such as beach volleyball, wind-surfing and racket ball as well as celebrate the New Year together with some music, dancing and fireworks.
A few stand out achievements from the trip were Ingmar Gunn winning the Aquathon, Duathlon and coming 2nd in the Triathlon against some stiff competition from the much more experienced athletes at the resort, Gregor Watson coming 2nd in the Kayak race, Charlie Lindsay coming to every single swimming session despite having a fractured leg and of course all of the Junior and Middle school runners who matched every session the Upper School athletes did throughout the trip.
We would like to thank Mr Holden and Mrs Glover for organising the trip, Jon for planning every swimming session and Mrs Lewis, Miss Shah and Mr Glover for giving up their holiday to help out with the sessions. We can’t wait for the next one in 2 years time!
