During the Easter holidays Sevenoaks School hosted the latest Kent Academies Network (KAN) residential course. A cohort of 37 students from six partner academies participated for up to five days.
The educational programme was diverse and offered participants an opportunity to experience a variety of enriching activities. The students, all of whom are in Years 10 to 13 (ages 14-18) enjoyed an introduction to gamelan music, African archaeology, conservation, philosophy and forensic science.
One of the aims of KAN is to broaden the horizons of participating students and to encourage them to apply for higher education. To prepare pupils for university life, workshops were available on valuable skills including effective revision strategies, applying to university and managing finances as a student. The sessions were provided by experts from Elevate Education, Barclays Life Skills and Causeway in a style that the students found entertaining as well as instructive.
With the exam season fast approaching, the Year 11 and Year 13 students were focused on revision. Teachers from KAN partnership schools offered their valuable holiday time to provide intensive syllabus refreshers in GCSE and A-Level subjects.
Interesting guest speakers are a regular feature of the residential courses, and for the Easter course KAN welcomed the Director of Turner Contemporary, Victoria Pomery, who spoke about working in the arts, her role at the Turner and pursuing a passion.
KAN Director Theresa Homewood was delighted that, once again, pupils on the scheme enjoyed the opportunities provided.
The Kent Academies Network (KAN) Universities Access Programme aims to provide four years of support to help academically bright and ambitious young people in Kent Academies to successfully apply to top ranking universities in the UK.
