Jahnvi Gada (Year 10) and Anna Power (Year 9) are regional champions in the highly prestigious International Competition for Young Debaters, having won the round held at UCL on Saturday 23 January.
The five judges for the final, which is run jointly by Oxford and Cambridge, were unanimous in declaring that the pair had won. They opposed the motion This House Believes Western liberal democracies should not give development aid to countries that abuse human rights.
Jahnvi and Anna, who were both competing for the first time, will go to the international final in the Oxford Union at the end of April. Jahnvi was also named second-best individual speaker overall. Millie Williams-Walker and Rosalie Owen came sixth while Saskia Ziv-Guest and Rebecca Funnell were placed 11th.
