Congratulations to Maya Raman Jones and Hethvi Gada in the Lower Sixth, who came 14th (out of 52 teams) at the Imperial College Debating competition. Maya was 16th best individual speaker (out of 104).
Congratulations, too, to Elise van den Hoek and Ellen Steiner in Year 11 who made the novice semi-final at Durham, the largest residential schools debating competition in the world.
Both competitions use British Parliamentary style, which means the students have only 15 minutes to prepare their arguments (with no access to the internet) for or against motions such as:
– This House Would give football fans the power to veto the signing or contract renewal of players at their clubs. – This House Would ban private donations to political parties.- This House Would programme self-driving cars to sacrifice their passengers when faced with unavoidable collisions with more people than are in the car.
