During the last week of the summer holidays, we welcomed over 65 Year 4 and 5 pupils from 24 local primary schools to our High Achieving Pupils Science and Maths Summer School.
The Year 4 pupils spent four days on the Magnificent Movement science course, where they took part in a range of interactive activities such as, chicken wing dissection, creating wind powered vehicles, skittles chromatography and exploring the laws of physics with their own fizzy rockets. This year was particularly special, as it was the first time we held the course in our new state-of-the-art Science and Technology Centre, which opened in September 2018.
The Science Summer School is now in its sixteenth year. The course was developed for pupils with an aptitude for science, and aims to provide a real challenge to children in the district who have shown potential, and give them an opportunity to work together.
The Mathematics Summer School is in its sixth year and is designed for pupils about to enter Year 6 as a way of enriching their knowledge. The Year 5 children on the two-day maths Code Breakers course enjoyed solving puzzles and breaking a series of mathematical codes in order to open various padlocks.
One science summer school parent said: ‘I can’t thank Sevenoaks School enough for the summer science school. My son had the time of his life and was absolutely fascinated by everything he learned. It really opened up his excitement about secondary school.’
A parent whose child attended the maths course said: ‘My daughter really enjoyed the two days. The staff and helpers made the maths really fun and ensured full understanding of the topics. They were friendly and approachable putting my daughter at ease. She found the topics interesting and challenging but pitched at the right level. Thank you very much’
