From Empire to Brexit: the UK in the World

On Friday 16 June the school was delighted that Antony Phillipson, Director of Trade and Partnerships in the Department for Exiting the EU, managed to get away from the office just days before the long-anticipated start of the Brexit talks to discuss the past and future of the UK’s role in the world with Dr Andrew Dilley, a historian specialising in the Commonwealth and Empire, at our ‘From Empire to Brexit’ evening.

The discussion was chaired by Sophie Littlewood, from the Lower Sixth, and Ishaan Bhardwaj of the Upper Sixth, who has an offer from Cambridge to study History and Politics in September, and ranged from what Andrew dubbed Henry VIII’s “original Brexit” to the development of the Commonwealth as an entity separate from the UK to how the other 27 members of the EU feel about Britain now.
