Sevenoaks School teacher delivers 28,000 books to 40 community libraries in Ghana
In May 2021, Sevenoaks School students joined together with students at 12 Kent and Sussex schools to collect, sort, stamp, pack and ship 22,000 books and sustainable educational resources to rural communities in Ghana.
The books have now arrived and are being distributed by Sevenoaks School teacher and EduSpots charity founder, Cat Davison, and Francis Yeboah, a Ghanaian EduSpots Director who visited Sevenoaks in 2018. This year’s annual book drive is especially important as most of the students living in these communities have missed nine months of school in 2020 with no online learning provision.
The delivery includes the Kwame’s Adventure series, co-written by Sevenoaks students for young Ghanaian readers. The EduLit group, part of Sevenoaks School’s service programme, worked with students and teachers in Ghana to co-create the series which enabled them to learn about Ghanaian culture, whilst giving Ghanaian students the chance to create books that reflect them and their communities
Since 2015, EduSpots has delivered more than 100,000 books, and worked with more than 50 UK and Ghanaian schools in the process with a focus on critically informed active global citizenship education. It has also raised over £350,000 to build and support 42 community-led library projects or ‘Spots’ across Ghana and Kenya which enable students, teachers and community members to have free access to educational resources.
