With the ongoing uncertainties due to COVID-19, we were delighted that we were able to take 17 runners on an early season training camp to the fantastic South Downs Bunkhouse.
The busy schedule saw the senior group of runners accumulate almost 60km over just seven runs in three days and the junior group of determined and gutsy Year 7s were not far off an impressive 50km. The runs consisted of steady meanders along the River Arun, hill reps, a Paarlauf at The Burgh and it all culminated with the Horsham parkrun (on tired legs!) After torrential rain the night we arrived, we were blessed with stunning autumnal sunshine, which definitely aided the runners’ spirits and motivation to carry on.
Between all the runs, the students took part in many other theory sessions, which included a running technique session with Mr Freeman-Jones with the chance to analyse each others’ gait; learning some run-specific drills and strength exercises; and improving their flexibility with a yoga hour. GB Runners and Old Sennockians, Sabrina Sinha and Phoebe Barker were very inspirational for our runners, offering them chance to ask questions about their journey in the sport.
Many students would definitely think of the tyre swing in Houghton Forest as a highlight, as well as competitive board games, the Domino’s pizza night and the final celebratory meal at the local pub.
The intensity of the camp has already seen runners improve their times and we hope that it will pay dividends in some of the major upcoming fixtures.
