Matthew Best is one of the most versatile musicians working in the UK and is unusual in enjoying an international reputation as both singer and conductor.
During his long career, he has given nearly 1500 performances and appeared in almost a hundred opera roles, working in 23 countries with many of the world's leading conductors. His most notable operatic roles include Wotan, King Mark, Amfortas, Gurnemanz, King Heinrich, Scarpia, Jochanaan and The Flying Dutchman.
In addition to his extensive work as Artistic Director of Corydon Singers (which he founded while still at school) and Corydon Orchestra, including at RFH, BBC Proms, at leading festivals across Europe, and in over 30 recordings for Hyperion Records, Matthew Best has worked as guest conductor with many leading British and European orchestras. He conducted his own opera, Alice, at the 1979 Aldeburgh Festival.
