On Tuesday 23 February Sevenoaks sent two teams of four players to King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford, our A team emerged as victors of the tournament.
Our A team consisted of Oge Flagg-Igbo, Harry Houillon, Christiane Gontarek and Victor Poracchia. The A team won the tournament with 13.5 points out of 16, with both Harry and Victor winning all their games and scoring 4 out of 4 points each. They played especially well in all their games and greatly helped the team to achieve the trophy.
Our B team consisted of Vir Poddar, Luke Massey, Jack Marsch and Janani Sivayogan. The B team scored 6 out of 16 points, placing them 9th out of 12 teams. It was the first school chess tournament for both Jack and Janani, who played really well against tough opponents. Luke Massey scored 3 out of 4 points, reflecting his increasing ability as a young chess player.
On the whole everybody played great chess and it was a fun event to attend, and it was a good experience for our younger and newer members to the chess team.
