Cambridge Debating Finals 2018

One of our debating teams has come fifth in the Cambridge Schools Debating Competition. Over 600 teams from around the world compete to be among the 40 or so who make it to Finals Day, so Sevenoaks was delighted to have two teams in Cambridge on Saturday: Yasmine Kanagalingam (L6) and Kartik Iyer (U6), who came fifth, and Ned Geake and Gabriela Ivanova (both L6).

They competed in the historic Cambridge Union against teams from Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Canada as well as the UK, discussing motions such as This House supports pre-entry closed shop unions, This House would privatise the oceans, and This House believes the EU should move towards creating a superstate. They are told the motion just 15 minutes before the start of the debate and have to prepare their arguments without access to the internet or other research materials.
