The Sevenoaks School Model United Nations delegation had a very successful weekend at the BISMUN conference in Bath (4-6 March 2016). Representing the countries of Argentina, Denmark and Venezuela, delegates constructed UN-style resolutions on a number of topics, including the current migration crisis, LGBT rights, sustainable farming and antimicrobial resistance. These resolutions were then debated in committees, with each delegate putting forward the views of their country and suggesting amendments to make the resolution passable by the UN as a whole.
Our students performed with confidence and skill; they learnt a great deal about diplomacy from the lobbying process, and had to tread a careful line between ensuring their ideas were taken forward and keeping newly-forged alliances intact. Marc Nedera and Laura Gilbert were rated as Commended in their committees, and Miranda Zhang, Izabel Khokhlova and Joe Mylod were Highly Commended.
Whilst at the conference, students also had the opportunity to see a little of the beautiful architecture of the city of Bath, including the Royal Crescent and Bath Abbey, although perhaps even more memorable to some of the team were our breakfasts of eggs Benedict and French toast, strawberry and Nutella rolls.
Many congratulations to the entire delegation who worked incredibly hard both before and during the conference.
