Sixth Form violinist Billy Hill was recently invited to perform at Buckingham Palace. He was accompanied by blues guitarist Ramon Goose, with whom he has previously featured on BBC Radio 6 Music.
Recently I was asked to play at a small concert in Buckingham Palace along with a few other young musicians. To begin with I thought it was a joke, actually – but, when I realised the invitation was genuine, I was of course thrilled, and accepted without any hesitation.
It was a fantastic day. After passing through security, we entered what can only be described as an incredible building. We had short rehearsals, and were very lucky to then have a tour of the state rooms and a rare insight into life inside the palace. We were told that the Queen was there, however unfortunately we didn’t see her.
The event, attended by many guests, such as comedian Alexander Armstrong and newsreader Fiona Bruce, was hosted by the Duchess of Kent. The palace Music Room, with its intricate domed ceiling and large walls, made for a great sound. Many musicians have played in private concerts there, such as Stevie Wonder, who performed just last week.
In the concert itself, act after act was stunning. The piece that I played with Ramon Goose (Blues guitarist) was a set of contemporary folk tunes. Although different to the rest, this broke up the programme of classical music, including King’s College boys choir, and visibly relaxed the mood in the room.
Overall, it was a brilliant experience, which I doubt I will ever get the opportunity to have again.
