Pitched as either an Art Trip or a fitness extravaganza, the Sixth Form tour to New York is always jam-packed! New York is such a fantastic place to visit for art, with galleries such as the Guggenheim, the Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art), MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) and Whitney Museum of American Art.
This year we spent a day touring the Whitney, High Line and Chelsea District which contains a huge number of commercial galleries. Some students managed up to 20 gallery visits that day alone. We had a walking tour of the street art in Brooklyn led by an expert in this field. He inspired us with his outstanding knowledge of the graffiti and mural art scene as it has changed and gained significance in different ways. A day at the Met meant having the opportunity to view over a million works of art, though I am fairly sure one would need about a week to achieve this.
Alongside all the art, we managed to squeeze in a Broadway show, a trip on the Staten Island Ferry with views towards the Statue of Liberty, and we visited the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center) for some outstanding views over New York. The trip will be remembered for eating too many bagels, walking over ten miles on average per day, and seeing some of the world’s most fantastic collections of art. We have blisters on our feet but sketchbooks and camera rolls full of ideas and inspiration.
