Vibrant, supportive and high-achieving; the Chemistry department bustles with energy and enthusiasm. We use jaw-dropping demonstrations to inspire and the expertise of staff to nurture and stretch. We want students look at the world in a different light: through the eyes of a discerning scientist who appreciates Chemistry as the central science.

What in the world isn't Chemistry?

The study of Chemistry has become increasingly popular as the subject's relevance and importance in the world and workplace is more widely understood. In Years 7 and 8, pupils are introduced to the fundamental tenets of chemistry; how and why reactions happen, with numerous opportunities to get their hands dirty.

In Years 9 to 11, we bring in key examples of chemistry in industry and at home, and prepare pupils excellently for the challenges of IB Chemistry. Numbers in the Sixth Form continue to grow year-on-year, with over 120 taking IB Chemistry. The IB course is rigorous and challenges students' understanding of materials and processes. The course demonstrates how everything we see and touch can be explained at a chemical level.

The department is staffed by experienced teachers, many of whom worked in research before moving into education, and is well-served by a team of dedicated technicians. We have the facilities to carry out complex and uncommon practical work, including six high-specification, modern laboratories complete with interactive whiteboards and high-quality furniture.

Outside the classroom, we run clubs to inspire and excite pupils of all ages; recording stunning reactions to put on YouTube, making slime and other conconctions, and exploring new chemistry within familiar contexts such as shampoo or road-gritting. Chemistry runs through everything in our day-to-day lives. We aim to give students the ability to see below the surface at the beauty lying beneath.
