University offers 2018

As the 2018 university offers season nears the end of its cycle, we are delighted to report a phenomenal set of offers from world-class UK, US and international universities.

From Sevenoaks, 229 applicants have received 827 offers from UK universities. Our students were successful in 74 per cent of all their applications across the cohort, with three-quarters of the cohort receiving three offers or more.

We had particularly pleasing offer rates:

• Forty-two students received offers from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, with Cambridge making 19 offers and Oxford 23 offers

• 100% offer rate at York, Surrey and Southampton

• 94% offer rate at Bath, Nottingham and Warwick

• 77 offers from Durham

• 80 offers from UCL

• 84 offers from Exeter

Medicine and Veterinary Science
Our 25 prospective Medics, Dentists and Veterinary Scientists have had a very successful year. Together they have secured a total of 62 offers to study Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Medicine.

Our 21 Medics received a total of 51 offers. Of particular note, seven received offers from UCL where approximately 2500 applications to the Medical School are received each year, for a total of 322 places.

King’s offered seven places, Queen Mary six places, Bristol five places, Edinburgh four places, Newcastle three places. Oxford, Imperial, Exeter, Birmingham, Queen’s Belfast and Sheffield each made two offers. Other universities making one offer included St George’s, Brighton and Sussex, Manchester, St Andrews, Nottingham, Leeds and Plymouth.

We had one student who applied for Dentistry and he received an offer from King’s College. Our three prospective Veterinary Science applicants received a total of ten offers including, one from Cambridge, two from the Royal Veterinary College, London, and two from Surrey. Bristol, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Nottingham and Reading each made one offer.

International offers
Those who applied to universities overseas were equally successful. This year, 37 students made applications to 65 different US colleges, making a total of 254 applications. The US picture isn’t yet fully complete, as some of our students remain on the waitlist at top institutions, but we have 64 excellent offers so far.

Students have received offers from Stanford (two), Yale (two), Princeton, Brown, Yale-NUS, Duke, Columbia, and Chicago where overall admit rates are less than ten per cent, with admit rates for Stanford less than five per cent this year and only 2040 admitted in total. Offers have also been received from Berkeley (two), Cornell, UCLA (seven), Northwestern, Boston University (two), Carnegie Mellon (two) and Johns Hopkins.

There have been multiple offers from Georgia Tech, NYU, Purdue, RISD, Parsons, UC San Diego and the University of Michigan. Other prestigious universities that have accepted Sevenoaks students include: USC, Rice University, Vassar College, Northeastern, Wesleyan University, The University of Texas, UC Davis, the University of Denver, Grinnell College, George Washington University, Rochester Tech, School of the Visual Arts and The New School.

Sevenoaks students have made 14 applications to Canadian universities, with offers received from McGill, the University of Toronto and UBC, and eight applications to universities within Hong Kong, with offers from the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to date. Offers have also been received from The Hague University of Applied Sciences and Delft University of Technology.

Congratulations to our Sixth Formers on this outstanding set of offers.

UK Universities

Students applying to UK universities have been successful in their applications to some of the most competitive institutions including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE, and Durham. We are delighted that a total of 42 offers have been made to our students by the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, (23 offers from Oxford; 19 from Cambridge).

The most popular university destinations for our students this year are UCL (106 applicants), Durham (99 applicants), Exeter (88 applicants), and Bristol (75 applicants), for courses across a range of disciplines. To date, our students have received 22 offers from Imperial, 12 from LSE, 38 from Durham, and 55 from UCL.

Nationally, Medicine continues to be one of the competitive courses available. Twenty-six Sevenoaks students have applied for Medicine. So far five students have offers to read Medicine at KCL, Bristol, Plymouth and two have Oxford offers for Medicine. All three applicants for Veterinary Science and Veterinary Medicine have offers: one at Bristol, and two at Surrey.

International Universities

A good number of our students apply to study abroad. Forty Sevenoaks students have applied to US universities (nearly 20 per cent of our students), and nine have applied to prestigious universities in Canada; a further five students have applied to Hong Kong, and four to universities across Europe.

Early US Offers

Five early offers have been made by distinguished American institutions, including Yale, NYU, Northwestern, and Columbia. One student has been awarded the highly competitive Robertson Scholarship at Duke University. This is a great achievement: we believe that only three of the 18 finalists from the UK were selected. Early US offer recipients include some of the most able and motivated students worldwide.

The current UCAS cycle for offers is far from complete – final outcomes are not likely to be known until the end of March. At this stage we are delighted to congratulate all our students who have so far achieved an exceptional level of success with their university offers.

We are constantly aware of just how good the IB is as preparation for university entry; it enables all our students to progress onto some of the world’s best universities, on some of the most competitive and challenging degree programmes.

University Results 2016

There will be 211 university entrants this year from Sevenoaks School to leading universities across the world.

Eighty-seven per cent took up a place at one of the Russell Group universities. Of these, 29 Sennockians are taking up places at Oxford or Cambridge, while 53 are taking up places at one of the London colleges including LSE, UCL, KCL and Imperial. Other popular university destinations were Durham, Exeter, Warwick, Edinburgh and York. This year 26 students took up places at top US or Canadian universities, while another 11 made successful applications to European or other international universities.

The Sciences remain a popular subject choice (40 students), followed by Combined Honours and Liberal Arts (30), and Economics and Business (27). History, Politics and International Relations (24), Geography, Law, Psychology and Languages all continue to attract large numbers of applicants. Fourteen students will take up a place to study Medicine. Thirty-six students opted to take a gap year, with three of those holding deferred offers.

With the competition for places becoming ever fiercer, this is a tremendous record of achievement, and we wish all our new undergraduates every success in their higher education and future careers.

University Results 2015

With the university offers season just at its close, we are delighted to report that we have an excellent 75% offer rate with 786 offers from UK universities.  This means that our students were successful in three quarters of all their applications across the cohort, with roughly a third receiving offers from all five universities they applied to and two thirds receiving four offers or more.

Our prospective medics had a record year of offers, as we saw a 10% increase in the offer rate and well over 80% of our Medicine applicants now hold an offer.  Of particular note, six Sevenoaks students received offers from UCL where over 2500 applications were received this year and only 298 offers were made.  We were delighted by the number of offers received in every discipline.
