An introduction to the Head
Dr Katy Ricks joined Sevenoaks School as Head in September 2002. She has enjoyed a distinguished academic career.
Our school has nearly 600 years of history, and provides a strong foundation for providing an independent-spirited and imaginative education for the modern world. We emphasise critical thinking, collaboration and discovery. Our curriculum culminates in, and is inspired by, the International Baccalaureate – its hallmarks are breadth, balance and rigour. We have delivered this innovative programme for many years – quite simply because it is the best way of enabling young people to learn. The relationship between staff and students is very supportive and is based on mutual respect. The Sevenoaks style of education is powerful preparation for students for success at university and in the world of work.
Sevenoaks is academically fast-paced: our students’ academic results are outstanding, and they go on to study at top universities in the UK, the US and across the world. The independence and confidence of our leavers is a result of an enlightened pastoral care system which encourages students to take responsibility for themselves. Learning support is there for those who need more help.
We have been described as cosmopolitan and unstuffy. In part this comes from the variety and diversity of our student body. Our fully co-educational international mix, from some 40 different nationalities, enables them to experience first-hand our increasingly global world.
Our ambitious spirit is balanced by a strong sense of enjoyment, and energised by a lively common purpose. Our focus on service to the community fosters compassion and understanding in our students. We hope they leave us as the best possible young adults: kind, knowledgeable, committed young people to whom we can confidently and proudly entrust the future.
A child gets only one go at education – we want it to be superb.
