AAAS San Jose 2015
Over half term, 30 Lower Sixth Higher Level Science students attended the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in San Jose California. The theme for 2015 was Innovation, Information and Imaging. For three and a half days we attended lectures, seminars and symposia on a wide a rage of scientific fields including biochemistry; particle physics; astronomy; genomics; neurobiology; microbiology; and geoengineering.
Over half term, 30 Lower Sixth Higher Level Science students attended the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in San Jose California. The theme for 2015 was Innovation, Information and Imaging.
For three and a half days we attended lectures, seminars and symposia on a wide a rage of scientific fields including biochemistry; particle physics; astronomy; genomics; neurobiology; microbiology; and geoengineering. The choice was overwhelming and students were given a sense of the breadth of scientific research taking place throughout the world.
Highlights included a lecture entitled Antimicrobial resistance: A rising Global Threat, given by Dame Sally Davis, the Chief Medical Officer for England, and a fascinating plenary lecture on palaeontology and evolution by Neil Shubin, entitled Finding Your Inner Fish.
During the week we also enjoyed attending a San Jose Sharks ice hockey match, a sightseeing bay cruise and a walking tour of Chinatown in San Francisco.
