Congratulations to Year 7 pupils Cathrine and Josephine Hogh, who assisted with the draw for the Barclays ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Finals.
The draw took place at La Galleria, Pall Mall in London on 16 November. Cathrine and Josephine had been selected to draw some of the players. Cathrine drew Berdych to be in group A with Nadal, which meant that Andy Murray ended up in group B with Federer. Josephine drew some of the doubles players. Most of the senior ATP officials were present at the draw, which was shown on various TV channels, with the Hogh twins being mentioned by Mark Petchey, commentator for the BBC and Sky Sports.
The ATP world tour finals were held at the O2 in London from 21 to 28 November. The eight best singles players in the world and best eight doubles teams of the year qualify for this tournament, which is fast becoming the second most important tennis event in the UK after Wimbledon. This year Nadal, Federer, Murray, Roddick, Djokovic, Berdych, Ferrer and Soderling had qualified.
Cathrine and Josephine, who are members of West Heath Tennis club, had been invited to participate as the winners of the Save the Children charity tournament for U14 girls. This was held at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton on 10 October, with the trophies presented by Annabel Croft.
They were also invited to do some show tennis playing at the O2 on Wednesday 22 November. Boris Becker, Pat Cash and Andy Murray attended and spent time with the Save the Children tournament winners. Josephine and Cathrine spoke to Boris Becker, collected autographs and enjoyed playing on the practice courts right after Andy Murray. They were filmed by CNN and watched by hundreds of spectators who had either seen the tournament between Andy Roddick and Berdych or were going to see Nadal play Djokovic later on at the O2. Finally, the Save the Children winners were invited to watch the evening game between Nadal and Djokovic.
