Sevenoaks School was delighted to welcome as a Visiting Fellow Dr Kelly Moule, of the School of Biochemistry at the University of Bristol. In addition to her academic specialism, Dr Moule is also Admissions Tutor for Biochemistry. During her three-day visit to Sevenoaks (8-10 September), Dr Moule shared her expertise in the sciences and on admissions matters with Sevenoaks staff and Sixth Form students.
The high point of Dr Moule’s visit was a fascinating lecture that she delivered on obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Drawing on recent research into this area, Dr Moule demonstrated how a growing incidence of obesity in the developed world, due to the ready affordability of fatty foods, has led to a consequential growth in Type 2 Diabetes. Illustrating her talk with compelling data from the USA and Europe, Dr Moule showed that Type 2 Diabetes has rapidly become a major cause for concern in public health. An especially powerful statistic is the fact that 10% of the NHS budget is now spent on therapies for patients experiencing the complications arising from Type 2 Diabetes. At the core of this lecture was an in-depth explanation of the functioning of the pancreas and its role in insulin-production.
At the end of her lecture Dr Moule kindly responded to a number of questions from Sevenoaks students.
